The Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) would like to alert consumers to a squishy toy that comes with a sharp needle syringe, marketed as a stress-relieving product, that poses serious safety risks.

CPSO has observed social media videos demonstrating the use of such squishy toys with sharp needle syringes. The syringe injects air into the toy, creating a blister-like bulge on the surface that can be squeezed or popped.

The sharp needle can puncture the skin and is not sterile, posing serious risks of injury and infection to a child who may not understand how to safely handle sharp syringes. Additionally, should air bubbles enter a child’s bloodstream through injection, there can be a risk of stroke, heart attack, respiratory failure or death.

Parents are advised not to purchase these toys for their children and to keep any existing toys out of children’s reach. Owners of such toys are strongly encouraged to dispose of the sharp needle safely by placing them in a hard, puncture-resistant container with a secure lid before disposing with general waste.

Several jurisdictions including Hong Kong, Macau, Philippines, Taiwanand Thailand have warned the public about the dangers of this product. This product is also known by other names such as “pimple popping toy”, “acne squeeze toy”, “bubble squeezing toy”, “inflatable squishy toy”, “pinch toy” or similar variations of such names.
